Report reveals SA has highest power prices in Australia

A new report from the Australian Energy Regulator reveals South Australia has the highest residential power prices in Australia and that South Australians are paying $212 more than Steven Marshall promised.

The AER 2021 Annual Benchmarking Report reveals South Australia has the highest residential power prices of any state or territory in the National Electricity Market.

SA also has the highest rate of disconnections.

The AER’s Annual Retail Markets Report 2020-21 reveals the median South Australian residential power bill is $1,784.

Steven Marshall promised before the last State Election he would reduce power bills by $302 based on 2016-17 power prices.

His policy document specifically stated his measures would see “an average South Australian household's power bill fall by $302, compared to the latest (2016-17) prices”.

On that measure, prices this year should have been $1,572 – a $302 reduction compared with the 2016-17 price of $1,874.

Just last week, the Australian Energy Market Commission revealed SA power prices are set to go up by $86 per household in the next year.

The AER’s report reveals yet again Steven Marshall has broken his promise to cut power prices by $302.

Whichever way the Liberals slice and dice the numbers, they have failed to deliver their promise.

The report also reveals South Australia has the highest power prices in Australia, compared with every other state and territory in the National Electricity Market.
