Liberals’ new one-way expressway?

The Marshall Liberal Government’s latest half-baked idea to fix traffic congestion in the hills has all the hallmarks of the Liberals’ infamous one-way expressway.

Corey Wingard has announced he wants to spend $75 million of taxpayers’ money to install moveable barriers on the South Eastern Freeway. He has only allocated $15 million towards the project.

This must feel like deja vu for Hills residents. At the last election, the Liberals promised to build the GlobeLink road, air and rail project to ease traffic congestion. It was Steven Marshall’s signature policy.

But after the election, Steven Marshall dumped GlobeLink.

The Liberals infamously built the Southern Expressway as a one-way expressway, earning much ridicule across the state and around the country. The former Labor Government fixed the Liberals’ mess and made the Southern Expressway a two-way expressway.

If the Liberals had built the Southern Expressway in both directions back in 2001 it would have added $68 million to the original cost, instead it ended up costing $407 million when Labor fixed it and duplicated the expressway in 2014, ending what was a national embarrassment.
